Star Trek XI: Starfleet Kegger!!!!!
The next installment of the epic Star Trek film series has gotten an official nod from the execs at Paramount. The as of yet untitled project is to be helmed by J.J. Abrams who has Hollywood all abuzz with his recent hit TV series Alias and Lost on ABC. He is also the writer that brought us Armaggedon and Regarding Henry and is hitting the scene big time with his first directorial debut, MI:3. Combine this with co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who are writing the Transformers movie and the blockbuster that never was, the Island. These guys know how to write for big popcorn chomping summer blockbusters, lets hope they can do the Star Trek franchise justice.
The story is said to be a "prequel" of sorts, with characters such as James T. Kirk and Spock first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first adventures into space. Casting is going to be a tough job on this one. Who do you get to play one of the most revered characters in all of the nerd kingdom? However, with Shatner still alive and well, perhaps we will once again get to see him in his Starfleet uniform. Grandpa Kirk?
This could be a great film or a horrible disaster and as it goes with prequels today, lets hope Abrams and friends don't undo years of great escapism like some other notable prequels.
Memepunks Update: Here's a little bit of a Paradigm shifting idea. How about avoiding real big name actors for the main roles. Instead of paying out 50 million for stars, give a small percentage of the gross to privatized space flight programs.
How about it Paramount? Put your money where your communicator is!
